Options to Upgrade to Windows 10 Before Windows 7 End of Life
Windows 7 End of Life is coming soon. TekStop Computer Repair shares options for upgrading to an operating system that will work for your Prescott business or home computer.
When Windows 7 ends, Microsoft will no longer provide security patches or fix bugs. An upgrade to Windows 10 or another operating system will be necessary in order to maintain security and compliance. You do have options for upgrading, though some options are better than others.
- You can keep running Windows 7. It will not break, but it will become a non-secure operating system. Since Microsoft will not be providing security patches, your computer security is at risk. You also will likely have problems with apps that no longer work with Windows 7.
- Purchase an extension. Microsoft is offering a three-year extension through its Extended Security Update (ESU) program. You can purchase this extension as a last resort if you are unable to upgrade and need to run certain Microsoft products past the January 14, 2020 date.
- Upgrade your current computer. If you have a fairly new computer, you might be able to upgrade it directly to Windows 10. And you may be able to upgrade it at no cost if you still have the Windows 7 product key. The age of your computer is the determining factor here. You will need to check system requirements to be certain your computer is eligible. Even if it is and you are able to upgrade, you may not have the user experience you want.
- Purchase a new computer. Since your Windows 7 computer is likely several years old, you would be better off to get a more powerful computer to run Windows 10. Or you may consider moving to a Mac Chromebook and upgrade to a new operating system as well.
